They say that experience is the best teacher, but teaching is also the best experience.
Student TeachingBreckenridge Community Schools
Amanda Willman -- 5th Grade I was excited to return to a classroom in which I felt extremely comfortable. The students needed even more attention and care than the year before and I appreciated being able to be a listening ear. Student teaching, while challenging at times, was easily the best experience I had during my college career. I loved coming in every day and seeing the students grow, learn, and thrive. I taught self-created units in both Math and Language Arts and truly pushed the students to learn new material and express themselves creatively. Being in a one-for-one technology school, I was able to use my knowledge and abilities to help students and staff learn new skills and resources. I also conducted my Honors Thesis, interviewing students and staff about the use of technology in their school. I connected so well with the staff that I was able to express my own opinions and ideas. Overall, student teaching was a phenomenal experience, getting to learn the daily life of a teacher. |

Junior Year Placement #2Luce Road Early Childhood Learning Center
Theresa Goecker -- Kindergarten Walking into the Kindergarten classroom, I knew it was going to be an entirely different atmosphere than what I was used to - and I was right. I remember wondering, after the first few days, how any teacher would be able to do it day after day. However, I stuck with it and taught multiple small group lessons in Math and Language Arts. While I can say that Kindergarten is not necessarily in my comfort zone, I did end up really enjoying the time I spent there. |
Junior Year Placement #1
Breckenridge Community Schools
Amanda Willman -- 5th Grade After a great first classroom experience, I was ready to jump in to my second placement, and it showed. Every day I walked in and immediately started helping students with whatever they were working on. I taught two whole class lessons in Social Studies (Explorers) and Science (Adaptations). Both of these went extremely well. At that point, I realized how comfortable I felt, not only in that particular classroom, but also with helping students learn and grow as individuals. |

Sophomore Year PlacementIthaca Public Schools
Jennifer Workman -- 4th Grade With this being my first classroom experience, I was unsure what to expect. I am very thankful that this class showed me what it will be like to be a teacher. The students in the class were all over the board as far as skill level, ability, and even home life. With a lot of effort, they were all able to help each other succeed. |
