Teaching for Understanding with TechnologyInstructor: Debbie McHorney-Enokian
This course is the first course in the MAET program. In this course, we learned about how students need to go through a process of learning, understanding, and conceptual change in the classroom. This process of learning can be accomplished when teachers use their technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK) to create engaging lessons. We focused on what it means to be a 21st-century learner by practicing a new skill completely online.
Adapting Innovative Technology to EducationInstructor: Colin Gallagher
This course started off with a reflection on failure. We learned about the process of iteration: failing, learning, innovating, and making it all intertwine to create new things and discover new knowledge. We worked with new technology by designing a lesson around some innovative technology. Overall, this course required a lot of deeper thinking and work with new technologies.
Applying Educational Technology to PracticeInstructor: Charles Logan
This class offered a variety of opportunities to think deeply about problems in our practice. We learned about different types of questions and different types of problems, including well-structured, ill-structured, and wicked problems. Once deciding on one wicked problem, we began to investigate, research, and create a solution to the problem. I thoroughly enjoyed using technology in this class to address problems.
Teaching Technology through DesignInstructor: Bret Staudt Willet and William Bork
This course was all about design. I took a problem in my practice and worked my way through the design process to try to find a way to impact my problem. I empathized with students to gain knowledge of their mindsets, defined the problem, ideated possible solutions with colleagues, prototyped, and tested my design. This class showed me that anyone can be a designer.
Learning in School and Other SettingsInstructors: Dr. Ron Houtman and Dr. Chris Sloan
In this course, I learned a lot about how people learn. I read about how habits form and change and about expertise and the development of schemas. I also learned about observational learning, about cultures of students and the lack of traditional learning styles, how to assess and provide quality feedback to students, and finally, the differences between formal and informal learning environments. These topics all impact how students learn and what they need to be successful in the classroom.
Electronic Assessment for Teaching and LearningInstructors: Alison Keller and Dr. Chris Sloan
This course was all about assessment of student learning. We discussed and developed a checklist to be used when designing future assessments, including their accessibility and their opportunity for feedback. Afterward, we created many formative and summative assessments using a variety technology tools. We also created a game-based assessment, which was a new way of thinking about checking for learning and understanding in the classroom.
Teaching Students OnlineInstructor: Dr. Anne Heintz
This course was one major project - designing an online module for students using whichever platform and teaching whatever content you chose. It was a tall task, especially to make it super engaging with unlimited possibilities. After reading research on teaching properly online, I worked on crafting a module that showcased my skills developing introductions using screencasts, creating communication policies, guaranteeing accessibility for all students, and producing assessments to measure student understanding. I learned a lot about teaching online, especially in a time when most teachers are teaching online.
Approaches to Educational ResearchInstructors: Dr. Michael Lachney and Matthew Schell
This course reviewed the proper etiquette for and types of educational research. We created surveys and interviews in order to acquire both qualitative and quantitative data about a variety of professional concepts. To practice interviewing protocols, we created interview questions and conducted mock interviews. This class taught me a lot about how to conduct research and how to use it to create engaging content for students.
Technology and LeadershipInstructor: Nicole Zumpano
While I am currently still taking this course, I've gotten to experience a lot of reading and discussion about what makes a good leader, especially when it comes to technology integration. I've analyzed various situations and used various mindsets to approach scenarios that could happen in a technology leadership position. We have identified problems and developed visions for solving them, which is a great skill for leaders to have. I'm sure we will cover much more content as the class continues.
Capstone Educational TechnologyInstructors: Dr. Matthew Koehler and Aric Gaunt
This is the final course for the MAET program. In this course, I worked to complete a personal and professional portfolio that showcases all of my projects and my beliefs. It highlights my abilities to communicate, collaborate, and use technology in a variety of ways. It shows that I can truly craft a powerful collection of artifacts that show my understanding of technology and the proper integration of it into the classroom.
